The purpose of this study is to identify and characterize different systems of guinea-pig breeding on farms in the town of Butembo. To achieve this objective, a survey was carried out among 60 breeders throughout the city. Results show that guinea pigs are raised on the floor in the kitchen, on the floor in a specific room and in cages. In many cases, guinea pig rearing is family-based. Carried out in the traditional way, family breeding is characterized by low animal numbers. Feeding is based almost exclusively on herbs and kitchen waste. With no management by the farmer and no external support in terms of training in modern breeding techniques, productivity is low. Factors leading to low productivity include mortality, overcrowding, lack of concentrated feed, disease, predators, and lack of organization. To improve the productivity of guinea pig breeding, it is important to increase knowledge of breeding systems and popularize improved breeding techniques. In addition, guinea-pig breeders should be supported and coached to encourage them to adopt commercial breeding.

La présente étude contribue à l’identification et à la caractérisation de différents systèmes d’élevage de cobayes dans les élevages de la ville de Butembo. Pour atteindre cet objectif, une enquête a été réalisée auprès de 60 éleveurs repartis sur l’ensemble de la ville. Les résultats montrent que les cobayes sont élevés au sol dans la cuisine, au sol dans un local spécifique et dans des cages. Dans la majorité de cas, l’élevage des cobayes est de type familial. Effectué de manière traditionnelle, l’élevage familial est caractérisé par des faibles effectifs des animaux. L’alimentation est basée presque exclusivement sur l’apport des herbes et les résidus de la cuisine. Avec l’absence de gestion par l’éleveur et d’appui extérieur en termes de formation en techniques d’élevage modernes, la productivité est faible. Les facteurs qui entraînent la faible productivité sont la mortalité, la promiscuité, le manque d’aliments concentrés, les maladies, les prédateurs et le manque d’organisation. Pour améliorer la productivité de l’élevage des cobayes, il est important de renforcer la connaissance des systèmes d’élevage et la vulgarisation des techniques d’élevage améliorées. A plus, les éleveurs de cobayes devraient être accompagnés et encadrés afin de les inciter à adopter l’élevage commercial.
