This reflection focuses on the spatial and socio-economic factors that hinder the development of domestic air transport in Côte d’Ivoire. This research is carried out in a context where Ivorian authorities, after independence, undertook significant actions to promote the growth of domestic air transport in Côte d’Ivoire. These actions included the establishment of an institutional and regulatory framework, as well as the creation of an airline fleet, including Air Ivoire, for the service of the territory and the establishment of airports throughout the country. However, despite all these actions, the current situation shows that, more than half a century later, domestic air transport represents less than 10% of travel in Côte d’Ivoire. This study aims to analyze the spatial constraints to the development of domestic air transport in Côte d’Ivoire. The data used to achieve this objective come from documentary research, field observation, and surveys of domestic air transport stakeholders in Côte d’Ivoire. At the end of these investigations, the study reveals that the regression in the number of airports, the narrowness of the Ivorian territory, and the spatial disparities caused by the macrocephaly of the city of Abidjan are the spatial factors that hinder the development of domestic air transport.

La présente réflexion s’est penchée sur les facteurs spatiaux qui entravent le développement du transport aérien domestique en Côte d’Ivoire. Ce travail de recherche est mené dans un contexte où les autorités ivoiriennes, au lendemain de l’indépendance, ont mené d’importantes actions visant à promouvoir l’essor du transport aérien domestique en Côte d’Ivoire. Ces actions ont concerné la mise en place d’un cadre institutionnel et réglementaire ainsi que la création d’une part, d’une flotte aérienne, notamment la compagnie aérienne Air Ivoire pour la desserte du territoire et d’autre part, d’aérodromes répartis sur l’ensemble du territoire. Cependant, en dépit de toutes ces actions, l’état des lieux montre que, plus d’un demi-siècle plus tard, le transport aérien domestique représente moins de 10% des déplacements en Côte d’Ivoire. Cette étude s’est donc fixée pour objectif, d’analyser les contraintes spatiales au développement du transport aérien domestique en Côte d’Ivoire. Les données mobilisées pour atteindre cet objectif émanent d’une recherche documentaire, d’une observation de terrain et d’enquêtes auprès des acteurs du transport aérien domestique en Côte d’Ivoire. Au sortir de toutes ces investigations, l’étude révèle que la régression du nombre d’aérodromes, l’étroitesse du territoire ivoirien et les disparités spatiales engendrées par la macrocéphalie de la ville d’Abidjan sont les facteurs spatiaux qui entravent le développement du transport aérien domestique.
