Malnutrition is a serious Public Health problem; it is the cause of death for approximately 45% of children under the age of 5. Nutrition status assessment is one of a way which can contribute to resolve that issue. This descriptive cross sectional study has been conducted in Lwiro Health Area, in South-Kivu, at the East of DRC from December 2021 to Jun 2022. Its aim was to evaluate the nutritional status and mortality of children aged from 0-59 years. During this study, 366 children aged 0-59 months were admitted. Our data were processed and analyzed using Epi Info.; Epi Nut. Software helped us to standardize the anthropometric data. Z-score allowed us to determine the different forms of malnutrition. The chi-square test was useful to look for an association between the dependent variables and the independent and/or explicatory variables. The results showed that 62, 7% of our respondents were malnourished. The prevalence of global malnutrition was 6, 1%. Undernutrition was significant, particularly for stunting (33, 3%) and underweight (20, 8%). Our results show that 16, 7% of children had history of death under 5 years of age in their household, of which 15,5% were malnourished. Nutritional status influences the occurrence of death in children. A statically significant association was found between malnutrition and death (p=0, 0000001).

La malnutrition constitue un problème sérieux de Santé Publique. Elle est la cause de mortalité d’environ 45 % d’enfants âgés de moins de cinq ans. L’évaluation du statut nutritionnel est l’un des moyens pour contribuer à la résolution de ce problème. Ainsi nous avons effectué une étude descriptive transversale dans l’Aire de Santé de Lwiro, au Sud- Kivu, à l’Est de la RD Congo de Décembre 2021 en Juin 2023. L’objectif est de contribuer à la survie de ces enfants par une évaluation de leur statut nutritionnel et leur mortalité. Au cours de cette étude, 366 enfants de 0 à 59 mois étaient admis. Nos données étaient traitées et analysées grâce au logiciel Epi Info; Epi nut. nous a aidé à normaliser les données anthropométriques. Z-score nous a permis de déterminer les différentes formes de malnutrition. Le test de chi deux a été utile pour rechercher une association entre les variables dépendantes et les variables indépendantes et/ou explicatives. Les résultats ont montré que 62,7% de nos enquêtés font la malnutrition. La prévalence de la malnutrition globale est de 6,1%. La dénutrirons était importante notamment pour le retard de croissance soit 33,3% et l’insuffisance pondérale soit 20,77%. Nos résultats montent que 16,7% de cas d’enfants avaient un antécédent de décès de moins de 5 ans dans leurs ménages dont 15,6% de décès étaient pour les enfants en malnutrition. Le statut nutritionnel influence les décès de moins de 5 ans dans les ménages des enfants. Une association statiquement significative a était établie entre la malnutrition et le décès (p=0,0000001).
