Maerua crassifolia Forssk. is an evergreen fodder tree whose fruits, flowers and especially the leaves constitute an important resource in the feeding of the herds on the rangelands in Niger. This study is part of the identification of insect dynamics in the foliage of Maerua crassifolia Forssk. (Capparidaceae) in the Niamey region (Niger).The study was carried out in two stands of Maerua crassifolia at Abdou Moumouni University in Niamey. Entomological observations were made on randomly selected forage trees representing at least 10% of each of the two stands. The entomological fauna associated with Maerua crassifolia as well as the main defoliating insects belonging to four orders (Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, Orthoptera, Isoptera) were determined. The entomofauna inventory revealed the presence of 24 species; these species belong to 11 orders of insects from 22 families. Caterpillars of the genus Belenois (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) were collected and identified as the main pests of Maerua crassifolia’s leaves.

Maerua crassifolia Forssk. est un ligneux fourrager sempervirent dont les fruits, fleurs et surtout les feuilles constituent une ressource importante dans l'alimentation des troupeaux sur les parcours au Niger. La présente étude s’inscrit dans le cadre d’identifier la dynamique des insectes du feuillage de Maerua crassifolia Forssk. (Capparidaceae) dans la région de Niamey (Niger). L’étude a été menée au niveau de deux peuplements de Maerua crassifolia à l’Université Abdou Moumouni de Niamey. Les observations entomologiques ont porté sur des pieds du ligneux fourrager choisis de façon aléatoires représentant au moins 10% de chaque peuplement. La faune entomologique inféodée au ligneux de même que les principaux insectes défoliateurs de Maerua crassifolia appartenant à quatre ordres (lépidoptères, Coléoptères, Orthoptères, Isoptère) ont pu être déterminés. L’inventaire de l’entomofaune a fait ressortir la présence 24 espèces; Ces espèces appartiennent à 11 ordres d’insectes de 22 familles. Les chenilles du genre Belenois (Lépidoptères: Pieridae) ont été récoltées et identifiées comme étant les principaux ravageurs des feuilles de Maerua crassifolia.
